Construction of the 280 bed, 4 story addition to the existing Westchester County correctional facility presented the challenge of demolishing an existing building in the same footprint of the new building then constructing the new addition surrounded by a fully occupied and high security prison. Major building components include reinforced concrete superstructure with a brick exterior and detention grade curtainwall glazing system. Interior spaces included CMU and concrete cell spaces, day rooms, dining areas, holding areas, shower rooms, and isolation and supervisory spaces. Coordinating mechanical systems and power feeds to connect to existing building services required careful planning, as did timing of work crews to allow uninterrupted use of the existing facility.
